5 Journaling Prompts for Gratitude
We could all do with a little bit more gratitude in our lives, but sometimes it can be difficult to know where to begin. Here are some simple prompts to help you reflect on what makes life great:
1. Think about a success or an achievement you have had in your life, and write a thank-you speech to the people who helped you reach it.
If you were to receive an award for something, who would you say helped you achieve that goal? Write about what advice, encouragement, or knowledge they provided you, and how it may have helped you get to where you are now.
2. Think back on a hard day, and write about 3 things that have gotten better for you since then.
Take some time to reflect on how you came out on the other side of a difficult experience. What challenges have you overcome? What perspective have you gained? How are you stronger now than you were before?
3. What are your favourite ways to experience each of your 5 senses?
What smell brings back the happiest memories for you? What flavour of ice cream makes you feel like a kid again? What is your favourite song, and what emotion does it evoke for you? Get in touch with your body and think about what smells, tastes, sounds, sights and feelings make you feel the happiest.
4. What was the last thing that made you smile or laugh?
Whether you saw a cute dog on the street, watched a funny movie, or just had a laugh with a good friend, think back on the last thing that made you laugh or smile. Try to remember how you felt in that moment, and describe it in as much detail as possible.
5. What makes you feel safe and comfortable?
Think about when you feel the most relaxed and comfortable, then make a list of the things that contribute to that feeling. Whether it’s the comfort of your bed, a warm blanket, a loved one, a cup of tea… Large or small, think about what makes you feel safe, and consider taking a moment to incorporate it into your day today.
